A devastating amount of people wonder what their lives would be like if they followed their dreams. Dreams remain in an “intangible sphere” that few individuals allow themselves to break into. Dreams are dreams. You have to be comfortable with trusting your passions, and let life run.
The greatest challenge is overcoming the “fear of the unknown.” We fear the uncontrollable fate of our dreams. However, if you trust your innovations and conquer life’s unexpected obstacles, backed by your passion, you can count on happiness.
She Dresses the Best: Nina Dobrev, Bradley Cooper, Joel Edgerton, & more
I had the pleasure to speak with Ilaria Urbinati, A-List Celebrity Stylist, who has followed her dreams to become the QUEEN of the KING’s Style. She’s a super stunna’- stylin’ babe. Not to mention Rebecca Minkoff’s BFF & business Partner in their chic shop the Confederacy in LA. I was lucky enough to attend Rebecca Minkoff’s denim launch this summer (you can read about it again here!).
Where it all Began
Ilaria began her career as a buyer for Satine and Milk, posh boutiques in Los Angeles. Through one interaction, her life changed. Mira Kirshner, from The L Word, came into the boutique and introduced herself.
“Who is the buyer for the store?”
“We are looking for a new wardrobe stylist.”
Confidence is Key.
Ilaria interviewed for the position for The L Word, without any experience in styling. When she went into the interview, Ilaria approached the situation with confidence and prepared a wardrobe transformation strategy for each key character.
Success + Press= FREESTYLE
The L Word became a hit, which was an incredible opportunity for press. Ilaria developed personal relationships with individual celebrity clients and designers. She strategically worked with the relationships she developed to launch her “free-lance” career.
“I always go where the work takes me.”
Ilaria’s success is a result of her flexibility and trust. When she is called, she answers. When she was called to interview for a stylist position on The L Word, regardless of her experience, her confidence won her a position and everything began to fall into place.
“I Geek Out Over Mens.”- The Queen of the King’s Style.
She loves men’s style. We definitely bonded over that. We both could spend hours gushing over men’s shoes, and we both tend to incorporate men’s style into our own. When Ilaria styled for “The L Word”, Blake Lively’s Brother won best-dressed TV male, which led her to recognize her niche, men’s fashion. She had a friend that owned Mean Magazine, and he challenged her to style all of the men in the issue. UP UP & AWAY- SHE TOOK OFF FROM THERE.
Rebecca Minkoff’s BFF- 2 are better than 1
“I remember the day she made her first bag.”
One morning Ilaria and Rebecca- “Becky” were at the Grove, an outdoors Farmers Market in LA. Rebecca showed Ilaria her latest design, and that was the beginning of it all. At the time, Ilaria was writing for a lot of fashion magazines and the Daily Candy. Ilaria thought the bag was FAB and began writing articles on it and began to put it on celebrities.
The bag blew up from there.
This anecdote hit home. It reminded me of the days I would spend at the Grove in the summer with my BFF photographer, Chelsey Croucher. We would spend hours sipping on coffee and eating fresh fruit, dreaming about our ideas and inspiration. (hopefully we can be the next duo!)
Be the BEST.
“At the end of the day do as much work as you can even if it’s not the perfect job. The important thing is that you get the jobs you can and work harder than anyone you can.”
“The most difficult part is dealing with the politics of the industry. With women’s wear, it’s not about having the dress you want it’s about having good taste.”
Ilaria loves the movies more than she loves the fashion. She uses her fashion skills to innovate the screen.
Ilaria + Larz – We just so happen to have some things in common.
She was born in ITALY. (I’m Italian)
She loves the South. (GRITS PLEASE!)
She loves NASHVILLE. (Holla’ at Vanderbilt)
Look like a King. Be dressed by a Queen.
Today are the first classes of Teen Vogue FashionU. Last night we had a pre-party at Express – more details to come! Jus’trying to make my dreams a reality. Stay tuned for the weekend updates. A HUGE thank you to Ilaria for shedding some light and serving as my source of inspiration for this weekend!
Peace, Love, & NYC
